September 1, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Charlotte FC News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte FC today announced that the Club has signed defender Guzmán Corujo on a three-year contract with a one-year option pending a medical and the receipt of a P-1 visa and ITC.
Corujo will occupy an international roster slot.
The 25-year-old center back has played over 100 matches for Nacional since debuting as a professional for the Uruguayan club ÃÂ in 2017.
"We're very excited for Guzmán to be part of our inaugural roster and to sign a player of his quality from a top team in South America for free is a tremendous success. He is an experienced defender with a competitive, winning mentality who is entering the prime of his career," said Charlotte FC Sporting Director, Zoran Krneta. "Guzmán is a well-rounded center back that brings a physical style to his defending and is excellent in winning aerial duels. He complements the defenders we currently have on our roster and is an excellent addition to the spine of our team as we continue to build towards 2022."
A two-time champion of Uruguay's Primera División in 2019 and 2020, Corujo featured 22 times for Nacional in the Copa Libertadores, the top continental club competition in South America.
Corujo, who was scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season, signed a pre-contract with Charlotte FC. Players are eligible to sign pre-contracts with clubs within six months of their current contracts expiring. Upon Corujo signing the pre-contract agreement, Nacional terminated the defender's contract that was set to expire later this year. Corujo will join Charlotte FC in January for preseason.
Corujo is the seventh member of Charlotte FC's inaugural roster following the acquisitions of fellow defenders Christian Fuchs, Adam Armour and Jan Sobociński, and midfielders Sergio Ruiz, Riley McGree and Brandt Bronico.
