Phoenix Mercury News Release
PHOENIX - The Phoenix Mercury today announced Arizona State University women's basketball head coach Charli Turner Thorne will provide color commentary for Mercury games on FOX Sports Arizona throughout the 2011 season. Turner Thorne will join veteran play-by-play announcer Kevin Ray, who has been with the club for 13 seasons. Turner Thorne brings three seasons of broadcast experience to the table, all with the Merucy.
Just completing her 15th season at the helm of the Sun Devil program, Turner Thorne is the winningest coach in Arizona State history with 289 wins, third most in Pac-10 history. Most recently, Turner Thorne led ASU to a 20-11 record in 2010-11 and its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last seven years. The Sun Devils finished third in the Pac-10, the school's ninth top-three conference finish.
Also bringing international experience to the announcing table, Turner Thorne served as head coach of the USA Women's World University Games team during the summer of 2009. The team went 7-0, winning the gold medal at the 2009 World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. She also served as an assistant coach on USA Basketball's U21 World Championship team in 2007, which won the gold medal at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Moscow, Russia.
FOX Sports Arizona and FOX Sports Arizona Plus will carry nine Mercury games this season, beginning with the club's home opener on June 17 vs. San Antonio.
