Charleston Battery's 2015 Schedule Could be Club's Best Ever

February 2, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Charleston Battery's new 28-match USL PRO regular season schedule features 13 prime weekend home dates, six extra games against geographic and traditional rivals, and zero road trips with two games within 24 hours..

"I'd say it's the best ever - certainly the best since 2010," Battery President Andrew Bell said of the new schedule announced Monday afternoon by the league.

Twelve of the Battery's home dates will be played on Saturday nights - traditionally the most fan-friendly night of week. Of the two remaining home dates, the Battery will host traditional rivals Richmond Kickers on their only regular-season trip to Charleston on Wednesday, June 10, and kick off the Independence Day Weekend on Friday, July 3, in a match-up with Rochester Rhinos.

Last year's home schedule included five Friday night matches and one on a Wednesday.

The league was able to manage the schedule improvements by applying two twists. Charleston will compete entirely within the 12-team USL PRO Eastern Conference, and the league stretched the season from March 21 to September 19. The 2014 regular season ended on Sept. 5.

No team will have a longer season. The Battery are one of three teams that will host home openers on March 21 (against Toronto FC II), and concludes its schedule on the final night of the season in a home date with Charlotte Independence. On Friday, March 27, the Battery will also serve as the visiting team in the Independence's first match as a franchise. The Independence replaced longtime USL side Charlotte Eagles after the Eagles self-relegated to the PDL.

May will be the busiest month of the season, with six scheduled regular-season matches and the start of the U.S. Open Cup.

With the league expanding from 14 to 24 teams - including seven new MLS-owned cubs - dramatic change was inevitable. USL officials chose to break the league into two conferences, scheduling home-and-away series with each intra-league club. To make up the remaining six matches, the league scheduled six additional rivalry games.

For Charleston, that means additional home-and-away matches with Carolinas teams Charlotte and Wilmington, plus an extra road match at Richmond and a bonus home date against Harrisburg.

"With the remarkable growth of the league during the offseason, this schedule reflects the increased focus on regional rivalries," said USL PRO Executive Vice President Jake Edward, a former Battery player. We expect a great year of action as the league's regular-season schedule expands to 27 weeks."

Unless otherwise specified, Charleston Battery home games start at 7:30 p.m., with gates opening at 6 p.m. To purchase Battery season tickets, call Suzanne Sudzina Brandon or Ben Wynns at 843.971-GOAL (4625). Single-game tickets can be purchased over the phone or online here.
