Charleston Battery Finishes Four-Game Road Stint in Charlotte
June 15, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release
The Charleston Battery (5-3-5) plays their fourth straight match away from home when they take on the Charlotte Independence (6-4-3) Saturday night at Sportsplex at Matthews.
The Battery lost their first USL match since March 31 last week, falling 2-0 to the Richmond Kickers at City Stadium. Former Battery striker Heviel Cordoves scored the eventual game-winner in the 62nd minute from a set piece.
The loss in Richmond was the Battery's second in four days last week. Charleston was eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup last Wednesday, losing 3-0 to Atlanta United at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia. The back-to-back losses are part of a five game winless run for the Battery.
They'll look to get back to their winning ways against a team they've already beaten this season in the Independence. The Battery outplayed Charlotte handily on their way to a 2-0 win at MUSC Health Stadium on May 5. Ataulla Guerra, who missed last weekend's match in Richmond, scored the game's opening goal and Victor Mansaray secured the three points with a late goal in a substitute appearance.
The Independence haven't been beaten in the league since that 2-0 loss to the Battery in Charleston last month. Their recent form has moved them up the table and into third place in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte will enter Saturday's match on short rest after a midweek meeting with Atlanta United 2 at Coolray Field in Gwinnett, Georgia.
Charlotte and Atlanta split the points Wednesday night despite the Independence jumping out to an early lead. Eamon Zayed's sixth minute goal was cancelled out by a late Andrew Dykstra own goal and each team took a point.
Matches between the Battery and Independence are always close; all but three of the eleven rivalry matches have been draws or games decided by one goal. The Battery will be looking for their second win on the road this season Saturday night in Charlotte, but it won't come easy. The Independence have only been beaten once at home this season, picking up four wins in their seven matches at Sportsplex at Matthews.
With difficult matches ahead, both teams will be looking to get back in the win column Saturday night. Following Saturday's match, Charlotte will travel to play Richmond Kickers in another rivalry match, while the Battery will host the fourth-place Pittsburgh Riverhounds at MUSC Health Stadium.
