Chapman, Maier homer as Rocks roll over Hogs

WILMINGTON, DE – The Wilmington Blue Rocks used the long-ball for an early lead, and a big inning late helped them pull away for a 7-2 win over the Winston-Salem Warthogs in front of 6,111 fans at Frawley Stadium. The Rocks have won a season-high six straight games.

The Blue Rocks took a 2-0 lead in the first on a Travis Chapman two-out, two-run homer to left-center off former Rock Kenny Ray (8-7). Mitch Maier added another score on a solo homer off Ray in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

After allowing a leadoff double in the first, Wilmington starter Devon Lowery (8-7) retired 12 in a row and 15 of 16 en route to his fifth win in eight starts. Lowery went six and one-third innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out five batters.

The Rocks found themselves in a one-run game, 3-2, entering the bottom of the eighth inning. Wilmington exploded with four runs in the frame as eight men came to the plate and seven straight reached base, including a two-run double by Mike Aviles. Barry Armitage and Ryan Braun combined for two and two-thirds innings of shutout relief to cement the victory.

Tomorrow, the Rocks play day baseball with lefty Dusty Hughes (4-3, 2.33) against Warthogs right-hander Brandon McCarthy (5-0, 2.45). Game time is set for 1:05 p.m. at Frawley Stadium.

GAME NOTES: Travis Chapman has hit in all four games he's played with Wilmington since joining the club from extended spring training...All four of Chapman's hits have been for extra bases including two doubles and two homers...Mitch Maier went 2-for-4 with his homer, two RBI and a run scored, Maier has hit safely in 19 of his last 21 games...The Blue Rocks stands at a season-high eight games over .500 overall (60-52)...Wilmington's current six-game winning streak is their longest since a seven-game win streak last season from August 12-18...The Rocks collected 10 hits in the 7-2 win, the sixth time in eight games Wilmington has collected 10 or more hits in a single game...The Blue Rocks have hit eight home runs over their last six games.
