Clinton LumberKings News Release
Eastlake, OH - Clay Chandler and Kyle Wilcox combined to shutout the Lake County Captains in a 5-0 win by the Clinton LumberKings on Friday night at Classic Park. Keegan McGovern slugged his second home run of the series for Clinton (15-12, 54-43) who won their first series in Lake County (13-15, 42-56) since 2013.
Chandler (6-1) earned his sixth win of the season for a seven-inning outing in which he held the Captains to no runs on just three hits while walking one and striking out four.
Kyle Wilcox followed Chandler out of the bullpen and continued the suffocating pitching. Over the final two innings Wilcox did not allow a batter to reach against him as he struck out four including striking out the side in order in the bottom of the ninth. Clinton pitching combined to no-hit Lake County over the final six innings as they registered their seventh shutout win of the season.
The LumberKings jumped out early on Captains starter Juan Hillman. Joseph Rosa led the game off with a single to right and Ariel Sandoval chased him home two pitches later with a double down the line at third. Sandoval then moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate for the innings second run on a delay steal of home.
Hillman (3-10) settled down following the first but was still hung with the loss. Over his five innings of work he surrendered five hits while walking three and striking out nine.
In the top of the eighth inning, Clinton broke out for their largest rally of the night. Eugene Helder led off with a triple to center and scored on the next pitch when Jack Larsen singled through the right side of a drawn in infield. McGovern then sliced an opposite field home run to left for his fifth homer of the year, capping a three-run rally.
The LumberKings will continue their road trip with the opener of a three-game series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Saturday night. Clinton will throw left-hander Ray Kerr (3-9, 4.34) while the TinCaps will counter with lefty MacKenzie Gore (1-4, 4.00). Game time is slated for 6:00 PM (CDT). Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio ap at 5:45 PM with the pregame show.
