Chances Aplenty, But Roots Unable to Score on Laney Return

August 5, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Oakland Roots News Release

Oakland Roots return to Laney in front of a rowdy Wednesday night crowd. Roots put together a strong showing against division leaders Phoenix Rising finding themselves on the front foot on a number of occasions. After several weeks of injuries and changes to the starting eleven, the team is starting to find their rhythm and playing as a cohesive unit. Injuries to Tarn Weir and Tarek Morad forced the team to adjust, but Jeremy's Bokila's late entrance provided a huge offensive spark. He created several promising goal scoring opportunities but was unable to convert. Oakland Roots now head to Tacoma for their first of four divisional games against the Defiance.

Head Coach Jordan Ferrell

What are your overall thoughts on the match?

Having everybody here, this is what it feels like, just what real life is like for us here. I thought it was an amazing opportunity to show the whole world what the Magic of Laney is like. Unfortunately, the result didn't go our way. I think we had the better opportunities in the first half really and we controlled a lot of the game, but you know the game is built on moments and the time between them and in that moment they took advantage of their chance.

How did the injuries impact your team?

Obviously you have your captain, your center back go down with an injury that unsettles the team somewhat. He was a monster for us in the first half and basically up until that point. Kai did really well, but it's tough as a center back to step into a game, especially against the best attack in the league. It just unbalances us, and I don't think that's the reason for the goal by any means, but I do think it changes the game for sure.
