Phoenix Rising FC News Release
OAKLAND, California - Phoenix Rising FC (11-2-2) moved atop the league standings with a 1-0 road victory tonight at Laney College Field.
Aodhan Quinn scored the game-winner for Rising, which is now unbeaten in its last seven matches, collecting four clean sheets over that stretch. The team plays next at Las Vegas Lights this Saturday, August 7 (7:30 p.m. on CW 61 Arizona/ESPN+). Rising returns home to Wild Horse Pass next Saturday, August 14 (7:30 p.m. vs. Orange County SC).
Tonight, Quinn nearly broke the game open in the 21st minute of the match by switching the point of attack from left to right. The line-drive cross beat Oakland's back line over the top and put Solomon Asante in on goal. The two-time defending league MVP took a shot that was blocked backwards into the path of Darnell King, who had a strike, but Phoenix's right back was unable to keep his shot on frame.
Santi Moar nearly put Phoenix on top just before halftime when he accepted a pass from Quinn and turned a defender before cutting inside. From a few yards outside the area, Moar struck a hard shot towards the back post, but the attempt was too near Roots goalkeeper Zues de la Paz. The goalkeeper got up to make a diving save to his left side, a few feet inside the post to make it 0-0 heading into halftime.
Rising center back Joe Farrell stepped forward to win a ball at midfield at the start of the second half. The defender made his way past two defenders before sliding a short pass to Quinn on the left flank. Quinn took a touch and hit a line-drive shot at the near post, but once again de la Paz made a diving save, this time to his right side, to push the ball out for a corner kick.
Quinn tapped the crossbar again in the 57th minute of the match. This chance was a bit further out and the California-native added some extra velocity, but the attempt hung a little too high and clipped the top of the bar on its way over the end line.
Quinn finally put one past de la Paz in the 64th minute on a play that began with a long ball played over the top by Farrell. Asante brought down the pass and centered the ball to David Egbo. The forward spotted the run of Quinn and quickly knocked a shot pass into his path. Quinn slipped a low shot past de la Paz with his first touch, beating the 'keeper to his left side after he overstepped to his right side while attempting to guard his near post.
James Musa blocked a pass that easily could have ended up in the back of the net in the 77th minute. Akeem Ward created the opportunity for Oakland after playing a give-and-go out wide before attempting to sneak a pass through the center of the six-yard box, but Musa was in position to guide the ball out for a corner kick, preserving the shutout.
