EDINBURG, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC (8-4-4) defeated Real Monarchs SLC (3-10-4) 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Eduin Quero earned his first start with the club and hit a strike from outside the box, hitting the crossbar and sending it past the keeper in the 19th minute, 1-0. Quero's long shot marked his first career goal.
John Henry Sanchez scored his first goal this season in the 54th minute after sending a shot to the back of the net after connecting with Juan Carlos Azocar inside the box, 2-0. The third goal came for the Toros after Rodrigo Lopez sent a pass inside the six-yard box, allowing Christian Sorto to tap the ball to finish the play off in the 83rd minute, 3-0.
The first half kicked off with two back-to-back shots from Real Monarchs, but both were missed. In the 13th minute Christian Sorto sent a shot from the left side of the box but Jeffrey Dewsnup managed to stretch out to deflect the attempt out to corner. Tyler Deric was tested one on one when Bode Davis took him on, but Deric denied his shot and forced Carter Manley to kick out of play. Deric was replaced by Colin Miller following an injury.
In the 49th minute, Milan Iloski sent a cross following a corner, connecting with Sam Brown who sent a header from a very close range to goal, forcing Miller to save the attempt with a left hand deflecting it out to a corner kick. One minute later, Daniel Flores forced Miller to make another block inside the box, sending the ball to another corner.
Kyle Edwards came off the bench and sent a dangerous right footed shot over the keeper but missed to the left in the 65th minute. Malik Johnson took a shot that hit the left post, testing Miller once again.
