SASKATOON, SK - Stephen MacAulay made QMJHL history last night as the Halifax Mooseheads captured their franchise first MasterCard Memorial Cup. The Mooseheads dropped the Portland Winterhawks 6-4 and MacAulay registered an assist in the win.
"We were first place in the season, playoffs and Memorial Cup," MacAulay told the Chronicle Herald. "You couldn't really write it up any better. It's just joy right now and excitement and pride. I'm just really proud of the group. We battled so hard together and to win your last game is pretty special."
MacAulay, traded during the holiday trading period from the Saint John Sea Dogs to the Mooseheads for a pair of draft picks, won his second Memorial Cup Sunday. The win capped off an impressive major junior career that saw him play in four Quebec Major Junior Hockey League final series, win three President Cups, and win two of a possible three Memorial Cups. He has earned himself a spot in the QMJHL record books with his resumé, one of the best the league has ever seen.
Also picking up another championship ring is former Sea Dogs sniper Stanislav Galiev. The Russian import won the East Coast Hockey League's Kelly Cup Saturday night, scoring a goal to help the Royals take the crown.
Galiev was up-and-down between Reading and the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears at the beginning of the season. In 46 games with Reading he still put up 23 goals and 24 assists and 47 points.
After sustaining an injury to start the post-season, Galiev came back into the lineup and had four goals and seven assists for 11 points during the championship run, which was Galiev's fourth consecutive appearance in a league final.
Tomas Jurco and Alex Grant are two former Sea Dogs in the process of chasing down a league title. Jurco is in the AHL's Western Conference Final with the Grand Rapids Griffins, while Grant is in the Eastern Conference Final with the Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins. Both teams are tied their respective series at 1-1.
