Ottawa, ON - A late base hit by Casey Haerther propelled the Winnipeg Goldeyes over the Ottawa Champions on Friday night, by a final score of 6-5.

Haerther slapped a single into right field off relief pitcher Tyler Wilson, scoring James Boddicker from third.

Champions' manager Hal Lanier was upset with the umpires after the game, stating that he thought they cost Ottawa the game.

"I don't complain about these umpires much," a disgruntled Lanier said after the game, "but when you miss 10 to12 pitches, that's unacceptable at this level."

The Goldeyes dug Ottawa a big hole in the first inning, opening it up with a three-run monster homerun to dead centerfield off the bat of Josh Mazzola.

They would tack on two more runs, and exit the second inning with a 5-1 lead on Ottawa.

"They get a lot of base hits and RBIs," said Lanier, referring to the middle of the Goldeyes' order. Lanier also drew attention to Casey Haerther's production, citing his 71 RBI this season as a threat.

The Champions would come back and tie the game at five in the sixth inning. Relief pitcher Brad Mincey balked with Matt Tenaglia on third, bringing in the game-tying run for the Champions.

After multiple scoreless innings, the Goldeyes would take hold of the game in the late stages. After Reggie Abercrombie just beat out a throw at first to extend the top of the ninth inning, Haether's base hit brought home Boddicker to give Winnipeg what they needed.

Former MLB reliever Jailen Peguero game into the game to get the save, and wrapped it up with a strikeout of Daniel Bick to end the game.

The two teams face off tomorrow in the second game of this three-game set, with a 7:05 p.m. start.

Ottawa sends ace Andrew Werner (11-5, 2.78 ERA) to the mound while Winnipeg counters with Edwin Carl (3-0, 2.60 ERA).
