Hamilton, Ontario - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that the team has signed linebacker Markeith Knowlton to a new contract that ensures the 2010 CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player will remain in Hamilton through the 2013 season.

"Markeith is simply the best strongside linebacker in the CFL and one of the league's elite players," said General Manager Bob O'Billovich. "He's an extremely productive player on the field, an exciting player for our fans to watch, and a respected member of our locker room. We're very happy that we'll have Markeith in the fold for the next few years."

Knowlton, a 6-0, 205-pound native of Elaine, Arkansas recorded 71 defensive tackles, three quarterback sacks, three interceptions, three tackles for a loss, two blocked kicks, four forced fumbles and tied a Ticats record with six fumble recoveries while earning recognition as the CFL's top defensive player last season.

In 86 career games with the Ticats (2008-10) and B.C. Lions (2006-07), Knowlton has registered 310 tackles, eight sacks and 12 interceptions. He's been named an East Division All-Star for three consecutive seasons and a CFL All-Star twice.

The Ticats acquired Knowlton from the Lions on April 30, 2008 along with the rights to non-import kicker Ara Tchobanian in exchange for the Ticats second round selection in the 2008 CFL Canadian Draft.
