CFL names weekly award winners
Published on July 5, 2005 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
Player Name: Kerry Joseph #4 - Ottawa Renegades
Player Position: Quarterback
Highlights:
Completing 23 of his 36 pass attempts, Joseph threw for 302 yards while rushing for an additional 62 yards. Joseph found Frank Cutolo in the end zone for a touchdown, and rushed for two touchdowns himself.
Game Notes:
Joseph's efforts on Friday showcased him as a big time CFL star. While his team was down for the majority of the game, Joseph held them together, even when victory seemed too distant.
His leadership was outstanding, especially during the fourth quarter, when his efforts lead the team to 23 unanswered points, forcing the game into overtime.
At times it appeared that his sheer speed was not matched by anyone on the field. His determination on goal line plays lead to three touchdowns. During one of his rushing attempts into the end zone, the ball was knocked loose and teammate Cory Hathaway recovered it for the major.
1st Runner Up: Corey Holmes #19 , Saskatchewan Roughriders
2nd Runner Up: Ricky Ray #15 , Edmonton Eskimos
Judge: Ellison Kelly
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Player Name: Michael Fletcher #2 - Toronto Argonauts
Player Position: Linebacker
Highlights:
Anchoring the Toronto defense, Fletcher contributed all over the field. His efforts led to five tackles and one special team's tackle. Fletcher also contributed with a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and one interception.
Game Notes:
Fletcher's heads up play and versatility directly influenced the outcome of the game. His interception ended a promising Stampeder's drive, and hard tackle late in the fourth quarter resulted in a fumble recovery by Kevin Eiben, insuring Toronto's first victory of the 2005 campaign.
1st Runner Up: Singor Mobley #27, Edmonton Eskimos
2nd Runner Up: Agustin Barrenechea #39, Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Judge: Ellison Kelly
LINEMAN OF THE WEEK
Player Name: Demetrious Maxie #91 - Calgary Stampeders
Player Position: Defensive Lineman
Highlights:
Maxie and his fellow lineman were constantly putting pressure on the Argos, leading to three sacks, two by Maxie.
Game Notes:
Battling in the trenches all game, Maxie's power helped solidify Calgary's defensive line, holding the Argos to 22 yards rushing. Maxie and teammate Sheldon Napastuk constantly put pressure on Allen, pushing him out of the pocket throughout the game.
1st Runner Up: Sheldon Napastuk #92, Calgary Stampeders
2nd Runner Up: Joe Fleming #76, Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Judge: Ellison Kelly
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Player Name: Matt Kellett #15 - Ottawa Renegades
Player Position: Kicker
Highlights:
Ottawa Renegades kicker Matt Kellet had a perfect game, nailing all four of his field goal attempts. Kellet sent the game to OT, and won the game in double overtime.
Game Notes:
Kellet was consistent and made all the pressure kicks. After Kerry Joseph found Frank Cutolo in the end zone, Montreal's lead was only three points. With 2:43 remaining on the clock, it turned very possible that a kicker could win or lose the game.
From 32 yards out and one second remaining on the clock, Kellet tied the game sending it to overtime.
In the extra frames, Kellet went on to hit two field goals, one from 12 yards out and another from 14 yards, to lead his team to victory.
1st Runner Up: Damon Duval #15, Montreal Alouettes
2nd Runner Up: Dominique Dorsey #27, Saskatchewan Roughriders
Judge: Ellison Kelly
