Central Valley Fuego FC Beats Hailstorm FC in Stoppage Time After a Goal from Christian Chaney

July 14, 2022 - United Soccer League One (USL1)
Central Valley Fuego FC News Release

FORT COLLINS, NC - Central Valley Fuego FC traveled to the rocky mountains in the first installment of the Ice and Fire Cup on Wednesday.

In their previous matchup, Hailstorm FC prevailed in a 4-1 victory; a frustrating result for Fuego FC on June 22.

In this match, we saw a lot of first starts and first minutes for many Fuego FC players. Due to multiple illnesses and injuries leading up to this match, the technical staff had to rely on the depth of their bench and young talent to get the result.

Early in the first quarter, there was a 30-minute weather delay due to lightning in the area. As the teams returned to the pitch we saw a strong defensive backline counter Hailstorm's offensive efforts.

We saw goal attempts by Victor Falk, Cherif Dieye, and David Diaz who were just off the mark. The team showed resilience and aggression throughout the 90 minutes as they fought to bring home three points.

Christian Chaney's late entrance proved to be a strategic move resulting in a winning goal in stoppage time assisted by Ozzie Ramos.

Chaney's goal makes five for the season and a second assist for Ramos overall.

UP NEXT: Central Valley Fuego FC takes on the Richmond Kickers for the first time in club history at Fresno State Soccer Stadium on July 23 at 7:30 PM. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.

TEAM PERSPECTIVE

"Tonight was a massive victory for the team! We went in with a tough mentality and the guys played their hearts out," said head coach Martin Vasquez. "I'm very proud of them!"

"I felt excited and thankful to be able to get my first appearance," said Michael McFarlane.

"After having played in very tough conditions against Greenville and traveled across the country with only a couple days rest, we needed to preserve our legs and stay compact in the first half so that we could last for 90 minutes," said Victor Falck. "We knew that we would get an opportunity to score over the course of the game. So as long as we kept the clean sheet we were going to have a good chance to win the game."
