CENTRAL TEXAS SHOOTOUT HAS SEVERAL IMPLICATIONS
March 20, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Antonio Iguanas News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS â San Antonio Iguanas General Manager Rick Carden announced today in a press conference in front of the historic Alamo that the Iguanas and the Austin Ice Bats have named their upcoming best-of-five first round playoff series the Central Texas Shootout.
On hand for the announcement was the Honorable Mayor of San Antonio Ed Garza who voiced his confidence in the Iguanas in their match up with the Ice Bats by announcing that the Mayor of Austin, Gus Garcia, and himself have made a wager as to the outcome of the upcoming series. Should the Iggys come out victorious, Mayor Garcia will wear an Iguanas jersey at the next Austin City Council meeting following the series. However, if the Ice Bats prevail, Mayor Garza will suffer the same consequence by donning an Ice Bats jersey at the next San Antonio City Council meeting.
"We usually try to work together with the city of Austin but in this case we are definitely competitors," said Mayor Garza.
Carden also announced that the General Managers (Charles Newman, Austin) of both clubs proclaimed their faith in their hockey clubs by wagering each team's mascot to be used in one of the winning team's home games in their next playoff series.
"It is a huge boost for the fans of both cities to renew the rivalry in a way that each city has not been accustomed to and that is in a hockey playoff series," said Carden. "These two teams are very evenly matched and I think it is going to be a terrific series, but I am confident we will win."
Joining Mayor Garza and Carden at the Alamo this morning were Iguanas Head Coach Chris Stewart, Iguanas players Scott Green and Greg Gatto, and Iguanas Assistant General Manager Ben Broido.
The Iguanas and the Ice Bats will begin their series in San Antonio on Friday night at Freeman Coliseum. The series will then resume on Saturday night in Austin at the Travis County Expo Center. The winner of the Central Texas Shootout will go on to the second round versus the winner of the Odessa/El Paso series.
