The New Southeastern Conference

The Central Hockey League's Spring Conference occurred last week in Phoenix, Arizona and one development saw the only division to add a member be the Southeastern Division, where the Iguanas call home. Joining the mix is the CHL's 17th franchise the Laredo Bucks. The Southeast Division presents the best travel of any of the other CHL divisions as Corpus Christi, Austin and Laredo are all in relative close proximity, while the fifth division member San Angelo is within a shouting distance. The CHL schedule will once again be unbalanced, meaning that the fans of the Iguanas will be exposed regularly to their newly formed division rivals in Corpus Christi and Austin, while getting acquainted with their newest rival in Laredo early and often.

Van Horlick Taken in Expansion Draft

The newest member of the CHL is the Laredo Bucks who were able to acquire their first players in franchise history last week in the CHL's Expansion Draft. Each CHL member team had to expose three players, while Laredo was able to snag up to five of those exposed players. Selected by Buck's head coach Terry Ruskowski were Memphis' J.F. Picard, Oklahoma City's Mitch Ahearn, Lubbock's Lance Leslie, Bossier-Shreveport's Luke Earl and the Iguanas Matt Van Horlick. "Our objective with the expansion draft was to select quality individuals with a history of success, and all five players we chose have enjoyed outstanding professional careers to date and have the opportunity to the winning tradition we want to quickly establish in Laredo," said Ruskowski (courtesy of www.laredobucks.com).

What Been Going On (news and notes from around the CHL):

 Oklahoma City has signed All-Star center Marty Standish (38 goals and 44 assists last season with the Blazers) and rookie defenseman Kane Ludwar (127 games with Saskatoon of the WHO over the past five seasons, 14 goals and 27 assists)

 Lubbock re-signed center Jan Melichercik. Last season in 64 games, the first-year CHL player scored a career high 63 points (25 goals and 38 assists).

 San Angelo re-signed forward Kori Davison who finished the year as the Outlaws top rookie scoring 18 goals and adding 15 assists while piling up a team-leading 271 penalty minutes. A bunch of those minutes came in the box versus San Antonio (39 total PIM's versus Iggys).

 Indianapolis re-signed defenseman Ryan Aikia last week. In 55 games with the Ice last season, Aikia had five goals, 14 assists and 58 penalty minutes.
