Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Dallas Stars prospect assigned to Ft. Worth and will join team for opening round series
Fort Worth- The Ft. Worth Brahmas received a major assist from the Dallas Stars today as the Brahmas NHL affiliate assigned rookie center Brett Draney to Ft. Worth's playoff roster.
Draney, 6'0", 170, will be making his professional debut with Ft. Worth. He just completed his fourth season of major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League. In 57 games this year with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Draney scored 20 goals and assisted on 28 others for a total of 48 points. Prior to joining Medicine Hat this year, Draney played for three years with the Kamloomps Blazers. His best season with Kamloomps was last year, hen he had 18 goals and 27 assists in 62 games.
A native of Kamloomps, British Columbia, Draney was a sixth round selection (186th overall) by the Stars in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He attended two training training camps with the Stars, in the fall of 2000 and the fall of 2001.
Draney will travel from Calgary, Alberta this evening and join the Brahmas tomorrow morning as they fly out to Memphis. Game one of the Brahmas best of five first round series against the RiverKings will be tomorrow night at 7:05 PM in Memphis. Game two will be Friday night, March 22nd also in Memphis. The two team's will then return to Ft. Worth for Saturday night's game three at the Ft. Worth Convention Center.
Brahmas head coach Todd Lalonde anticipates Draney being a major addition for his team.
"Brett Draney is a very versatile player. The Stars hockey office is pretty high on him, and their anxious to see how he does in the professional playoff setting. He's played for the last four seasons in one of the most competitive environments around (the WHL), so I'm looking for him to be able to come in and contribute right away. His biggest strength is his speed and playmaking, and he'll definitely give our lineup a little shot in the arm for the playoffs," said Lalonde.
Two more Stars players that are on the Brahmas playoff roster, rookie center Jeff Bateman and third year winger Gregor Baumgartner, will remain with the Utah Grizzlies, the Stars American Hockey League affiliate, for the time being. Lalonde did not rule out the possibility of receiving one or both of those players at some point in the Brahmas playoff run.
"That's up to the Stars and the Grizzlies," said Lalonde. "Both of those guys are extremely talented players and they would be an asset for us. There has been a lot of roster movement between Dallas and Utah as of late so we' ll see what happens."
Tomorrow night's game one of the Brahmas and the RiverKings series will be broadcast live on KTFW 92.1 FM beginning at 6:45 p.m. All of the Brahmas road playoff games this season will be broadcast on KTFW.
