Central Baseball League announces players of the week

SportsTicker, the league's official statistician, has named INF J.P. Schmidt of San Angelo and RHP Eric Wikstrom of Shreveport its batter and pitcher of the week, respectively, for the week of July 25-31.

Schmidt hit .480 for the Colts during the week, going 12-for-25 with two doubles, two homers, seven RBIs and a stolen base. He reached base at a .533 clip and slugged .800 over that period. His best game came on July 31, when he helped the Colts earn their only win of the week, a 4-3 victory over Shreveport. Schmidt was 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, three runs and an RBI while batting fifth and manning third base.

Originally a 26th-round draft pick of Oakland in 1998, Schmidt, 25, spent six seasons in the Athletics organization, reaching as high as Class A Visalia. After playing part of 2003 with Washington in the Frontier League, he spent 2004 with the Northeast League's Aces, batting .251 with five home runs and 26 RBI in 69 games. Schmidt's hitting .347 with eight homers and 47 RBIs for the Colts this year, and was named Slam Baseball's batter of the month for June.

Wikstrom's only start of the week was a July 31 gem in which he held San Angelo scoreless in Shreveport's 7-0 victory. Wikstrom scattered eight hits over the full nine innings, yielding no walks and striking out six. Shreveport went 4-2 during the week.

Wikstrom, 23, is in his first year of professional baseball. He spent four years as a starter for Troy State University, where he compiled a career record of 24-14 and a 4.51 ERA. He struck out 222 batters 315.1 innings for the Trojans. This year for Shreveport he's 5-5 with a 3.18 ERA, third-best in the league.
