August 1, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release

FORT WORTH 3, SAN ANGELO 2 @ San Angelo, Tex. Time: 2:42 ATT: 1,285 W: Matt Harrington (5-0) L: Justin Craker (2-4) S: Juan Figueroa (10) HR: FW - Tony Mota (6) SA - Aaron Mendoza (8) The pitching tonight was not the stuff of which highlights are made, unless you count the "relive the glory of the championship season" tapes as highlights. Neither team's pitching was screaming Cy Young tonight, but were both instead quietly whispering "sit down, thanks for trying", as both starters worked deep into the game, scattering five hits over their course of work, fighting to keep their team in the thick of the battle. The Colts looked comfortable in the sixth, as C Aaron Mendoza hit a two-run home run to give San Angelo a 2-1 lead over the Cats and Fort Worth seemed mystified by everything P Rusty Weidmeyer threw at them. But that was not the end of the story, and the Fort Worth Cats looked no further than their top of the lineup, as LF Tony Mota cranked a solo home run, which would be the margin of victory as the Cats retain their stranglehold on the top of the League. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- EL PASO, JACKSON **Postponed** @ Jackson, Miss. Time: -- ATT: -- The El Paso-Jackson game was postponed tonight, the game will be made up tomorrow as part of a double header starting at 5:05 PM. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SHREVEPORT 7, COASTAL BEND 2 @ Robstown, Texas. Time: 2:33 ATT: 1,039 W: Dusty Dossett (4-3) L: Jose Luis Lopez (6-7) S: None HR: SHR - Coby Smith (3) CBD - Edwin Maldonado (6) Shreveport got a solid effort from the heart of its lineup and very good pitching from starter Dusty Dossett en route to their 7-2 win tonight over Coastal Bend. Four of the Sports' first six hitters collected two hits, and the four combined for eight of the ten Sports' hits, six of the seven runs scored and four of the Sports' six RBI. On top of the potent offense, the Sports rode a great outing from P Dusty Dossett, who allowed just two hits over seven innings of work, amounting to just one run allowed in the game. For the Aviators, it was very much a case of too little, too late, as they mustered just two runs in the seventh and eighth innings when faced with a 7-0 deficit, largely due to the sharp Shreveport pitching. The win keeps the Sports within spitting distance of first-place Fort Worth in the second-half standings. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- PENSACOLA 7, EDINBURG 4 @ Pensacola, Fla. Time: 3:08 ATT: 1,073 W: Byron Batson (8-5) L: Kevin Hull (6-6) S: Edwar Ramirez (9) HR: PNC - Jose Salas (6) It's good to be home, at least if you're the Pensacola Pelicans, who extended their win streak to five games as they begin a home stand against Edinburg. The Pelicans got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the second inning and adding another in the third to take an early, unanswered 4-0 lead by the fourth. Edinburg would answer, but by then they were too far behind. Pensacola added two more runs to a 4-1 lead in the sixth on a C Jose Salas two-run home run, and took a spacious 7-2 lead into the eighth inning, where even a two-run Edinburg rally seemed futile, as the Pelicans flew unfettered to a 7-4 win over the Roadrunners. Salas enjoyed a great night at the plate, batting 4-5 with two runs scored, a home run and four RBI to lead all batters.
