COMING IN
The RoughRiders swept a pair of games from the Gamblers on home ice last weekend, defeating Green Bay 5-4 in a shootout last Friday and claiming a convincing 6-2 victory one night later, before falling to the Black Hawks in Waterloo 3-2 on New Year's Eve.
The Riders broke loose for eleven goals over their first two games of the weekend to retake the league lead in goals per game (4.04). The Riders had scored three goals or fewer in each of their final seven games before the United States Hockey League's holiday break. The Riders' offensive revival coincided with the return of forwards Robin Bergman (concussion), Rob Bordson (mononucleosis), Jacob Cepis (bruised knee) and Tommy Wingels (broken jaw) to the line-up last Friday.
Cepis (17-15-32), who scored in both games against the Gamblers, ranks second in the league in goals and is tied for fifth in points.
The Riders this weekend start a run of three straight road games. The Riders are winless (0-4-1) in their last five away games.
Rider goaltender Kent Patterson has lost in regulation just once in his last six appearances, going 3-1-1 with a 2.30 goals against average and a .936 save percentage during that stretch.
The Gamblers rebounded from last weekend's losses in Cedar Rapids with a 2-1 win over Chicago on home ice on New Year's Eve.
The Gamblers have lost just once in regulation over their last eight games (5-1-2).
The Gamblers are the only team in the East Division whose home record (6-6-2) is inferior to their road record (7-4-2).
Adam Avramenko has been a workhorse in goal for the Gamblers. Avramenko leads the league in minutes played (1485:06) and has started 17 of Green Bay's last 18 games and 25 of 27 games on the season.
Segio Somma (18-9-27) leads the league in goal-scoring. Derrick LaPoint (9-18-27) is tied for the league lead among defensemen in points and ranks second among blue liners in goals.
The Ice started last weekend with back-to-back home wins. Indiana shutout Waterloo 4-0 last Friday and edged Ohio 3-2 in overtime one night later. The lowly Junior Blue Jackets rebounded to defeat the Ice 4-3 Sunday afternoon in Columbus.
The Ice has been formidable at home this season, posting a 10-2-0 record at Pepsi Coliseum. In contrast, Indiana has gone just 3-8-2 on the road.
Garret Roe (14-18-32) was named USHL Offensive Player of the Week earlier today after scoring four goals and totaling six points in the Ice's three games last weekend.
Roe and John Kemp (6-26-32) form a potent one-two punch up front for Indiana. The two are among a group of players tied for fifth in the league in point scoring. Kemp also ranks second in the USHL in assists.
At the other end, Ice goaltender Alex Kangas ranks fourth in the league in save percentage (.913).
Indiana is the most penalized team in the USHL. Ice players spend an average of 28.8 minutes per game in the box.
The Ice boasts one of the most potent power plays in the USHL. Indiana is tied for second in power play efficiency (20.0 percent) and has scored on an eye-popping 26.8 percent of its advantages at home.

COACHES
Cedar Rapids
Mark Carlson, 8th year (233-169-39)
Mark Carlson has been the RoughRiders' coach since the team arrived in Cedar Rapids in 1999. In 2005-06 he led the Riders to their second straight East Division title.
He has also piloted the Riders to six straight winning seasons and six straight Clark Cup playoff berths. The Riders are one of just two USHL teams to have reached the postseason each of the last six years.
The Riders are the only team to have advanced at least as far as the Clark Cup semi-finals/East Division finals each of the last two springs and four of the last five years. On December 3, 2005 Carlson picked up his two hundredth career coaching win as the Riders defeated Omaha 2-1 in a shootout. Carlson's RoughRiders went 218-159-38 in his first seven seasons with the club.
The high point of his tenure was leading the RoughRiders to the first Clark Cup (playoff) title in team history along with a share of the Anderson Cup regular season title and the East Division title in 2004-05. The Riders went 42-13-5 during the regular season- the best record in club history- and swept through the first two rounds of the playoffs before defeating Sioux City three games to two in the finals. For his efforts, Carlson was named the 2004-05 USHL Coach of the Year.
Carlson, a native of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing. Also while at Lowell, Carlson skated in the highly competitive Hockey East conference as a forward on the River Hawks' hockey team. His on-ice talent was recognized even before he arrived in Lowell when he was taken in the 1987 National Hockey League draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
After graduating from UML, Carlson spent one season as an assistant coach at Lawrenceville School before returning to Lowell to serve as an assistant to head coach Bruce Crowder. After helping the River Hawks to a berth in the 1996 NCAA tournament, Carlson spent another three seasons beside Crowder as an assistant at Northeastern University in Boston, where he also acted as recruiting coordinator. He earned a master's degree in education from N.U.
During his time at N.U. Carlson also acted as recruiting coordinator. Among those he recruited for the Huskies were Jim Fahey, who now skates for the National Hockey League's San Jose Sharks, and Mike Ryan, who would later be the top draft pick of the NHL's Dallas Stars.
Green Bay
Mark Mazzoleni, 3rd year (64-74-9)
Mark Mazzoleni is in his third year in charge of the Gamblers. Last season he piloted Green Bay to the club's first Clark Cup playoff berth in three years.
Mazzoleni took over the Gamblers after spending 16 years as a collegiate head coach, the last five at Harvard. Mazzoleni went 82-72-13 behind the Harvard bench, leading the Crimson to three NCAA tournament berths and two Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament titles.
Prior to taking over at Harvard, Mazzoleni spent five years at Miami (Ohio) University, where he piloted the Red Hawks to an 85-83-20 record and the second NCAA tournament berth in school history.
The vastly experienced Mazzoleni began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Illinois-Chicago (1980-85). His first head coaching job was at Division III Wisconsin-Stevens Points (1986-91) where he piloted the Pointers to three straight national titles. Mazzoleni next spent three years as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Minnesota (1991-94).
In his playing days, Mazzoleni was a goaltender at Michigan State from 1976 to 1980.
Indiana
Jack Bowkus, 2nd year (25-21-3)
Jack Bowkus replaced Dean Grillo as Indiana head coach on January 25, 2006 and guided the Ice to a 12-11-1 record and a berth in the 2006 Clark Cup playoffs. Bowkus joined the Indiana staff at the start of the 2005-06 season as an assistant after coaching in the California Wave youth program for eight years. As a player, Bowkus skated briefly for the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers before spending four seasons (1984-88) with the Saskatoon Blades of the major junior Western Hockey League.
HISTORY
Last season was the Riders' third straight 30-win campaign and also the fifth time in the last six years that the Riders have picked up at least 30 victories.
The Riders went 42-13-5 on the road over the last two seasons combined. The Riders' road record was superior to their home record both last season season and in 2004-05.
The Riders are, along with the Omaha Lancers, one of just two teams who have reached the playoffs each of the last six years. As all 12 USHL teams will qualify for the postseason this year, that streak will be stretch to seven consecutive playoff berths in April.
The Riders are the only USHL team to advance at least as far as the division finals each of the last two years. Furthermore, Cedar Rapids is also the only team to reach the league's final four in four of the last five years. Only one team (Sioux City) has even reached the second round three times in the last five years.
The Gamblers were swept in three straight games by the Des Moines Buccaneers in the first round of last spring's Clark Cup playoffs. That postseason appearance was Green Bay's first in four years. Prior to last year, Green Bay last appeared in the playoffs in 2001-02. The Gamblers also won what was then their fourth straight East Division title in 2001-02.
Green Bay has twice claimed each of the Clark Cup (1996 and 2000), Anderson Cup (1996 and 1997), and junior A national titles (1996 and 1997).
The Ice moved to Indiana from Danville following the 2003-04 season.
The Riders eliminated Indiana in the first round of the Clark Cup playoffs in both 2005 and 2006.
