Carolina Mudcats News Release
Salem, Va. - Garin Cecchini cracked a mammoth, two-run blast over the right-center wall to rally the Salem Red Sox past the Carolina Mudcats on a soggy Tuesday night at LewisGale Field. The latest setback is Carolina's fifth straight, and ninth in 11 games.
Owen Dew (2-3) suffered the loss for the Mudcats (11-20). Tied 4-4 entering the last of the eighth, Dew surrendered the pivotal shot with one out and runner at second base.
Matty Ott (2-2) picked up the win in relief for Salem (15-14). Ott hurled 2.2 scoreless frames, twice stranding the go-ahead run at third base.
For the 18th time in 31 games, Carolina opened the scoring when Zack MacPhee launched his first home run, a towering drive over the right field wall, with one out in the third.
The Sox responded by plating two against starter Joseph Colon with two away in their half of the inning. Carson Blair drew a walk to extend the frame, and reached third on a double by Sean Coyle. Nick Natoli followed with another double to score the runs for a 2-1 advantage.
Still trailing by a run in the fifth, the Mudcats knotted the score when newcomer Joe Sever singled, stole second, and scored on a knock by Yhoxian Medina.
Jerrud Sabourin pushed Carolina back out front with a two-run homer that soared over and out to right in the sixth. Francisco Lindor, who singled earlier to push his streak to seven, scored on the Sabourin blast for a 4-2 lead.
From there, it was all Salem. The Sox scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. Natoli walked, and Cecchini doubled to put the tying run in scoring position. Salem manufactured the runs with groundouts by Keury De La Cruz and Brandon Jacobs.
Tied 4-4 in the late innings, Carolina received lead-off doubles by Luigi Rodriguez and Tyler Naquin in the seventh and eighth, but both times left the runner stranded at third. Coyle made it to first on an error to lead off the eighth, setting up Cecchini's big moment.
The teams have a quick turn-around. First pitch for Wednesday's tilt is scheduled for 11 a.m. Right-hander Cody Anderson throws for the Mudcats against right-hander Mike Augliera.
Carolina returns home to host the Lynchburg Hillcats for four games on Friday, May 10th.
