Cavalry FC News Release

Calgary, AB - Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) officially clinched the Canadian Premier League Shield as winners of the regular season on Saturday night. By winning the CPL's regular season title, Cavalry has also secured a berth in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup.

Cavalry's 1-0 win at York United FC on Saturday afternoon, coupled with Forge FC's 2-1 win over Pacific FC on Saturday night, mathematically secured the league title for the club. Cavalry have so far accumulated 14 wins, 7 draws, 5 losses, in 2023, for 49 points overall.

The club will become the first team in CPL history to lift the Canadian Premier League Shield, which honours the regular season winner. The 2023 season marks the second year in which the league will recognize a regular season winner, after Atlético Ottawa won the league's first regular season title in 2022. The Canadian Premier League Shield was introduced by the league on Thursday. A trophy ceremony to honour the winners will take place following Cavalry's final home match of the regular season, against Pacific FC on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m. MT.

This is also the first CPL season in which the regular season winner earns a spot in Concacaf play. The Concacaf Champions Cup, which was announced in June 2023 as a replacement for the Concacaf Champions League and will be contested for the first time in 2024, will provide Cavalry the opportunity to compete against the best teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean. Clubs who have already qualified for next year's tournament include Club America of Mexico's Liga MX and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Inter Miami CF of Major League Soccer.

Cavalry FC will now shift its focus to the final 2 regular season home games and the 2023 CPL Playoffs. The playoffs provide another opportunity to bring home additional silverware in 2023. The club clinched its place in the playoffs following a 2-1 win over Halifax Wanderers FC on Sept. 12, and will now face the team that finishes in second place in the CPL standings for the 2023 CPL Playoffs. Prior to that Cavalry will face Valour FC and Pacific FC in its final regular season home stand. Details regarding tickets for Cavalry's first home playoff match will be communicated to fans as soon as they become available.

Tommy Wheeldon Jr.'s side will next face Valour FC on ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. MT.
