Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - In his final start of the year, Chico left-hander Trevor Caughey clinched the Golden Baseball League ERA title, and he did it with a flourish, holding the league's top-hitting team to just three hits and striking out a personal-best 11 batters en route to the first complete game shutout of his seven year pro career...the Outlaws provided plenty of offense behind him and together they beat St. George 5-0 Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium to knock the visiting Roadrunners out of the GBL's South Division second half playoff race.
Things did not well for Caughey, however, as he walked two of the first three batters he faced...but an inning-ending double play off the bat of Seth Loman ended the 1st inning threat, and St. George would not have a baserunner reach second base for the rest of the night. The Outlaws did most of their damage in the bottom of the 2nd - Bryan Silverman drew a one-out walk from Roadrunners starter Justin Abbott and advanced to second on a wild pitch...Casey Garrison reached on an infield single...and Jesse Kovacs lined a base hit to right to drive home Silverman and put Chico on the board. Matt Ceriani followed with a double into the left field gap that chased home both Garrison and Kovacs...then Steve Boggs delivered a two-out RBI single to knock in Ceriani and give the Outlaws a 4-0 lead.
That would be more than enough for Caughey, who after giving up an infield single to Greg Lemon in the 4th set down the next nine St. George batters and at one point retired 16 of 17 he faced. Chico wrapped up the evening's scoring with a run in the bottom of the 7th - Silverman coming through with a two-out RBI single to plate Boggs and push the Outlaws lead to 5-0. Caughey took it from there, retiring the Roadrunners in order in the 8th, and after giving up a two-out single to Lemon in the 9th got Eddy Garabito to foul out to Todd Gossage at first to end it and give Chico its third straight win and eighth in a row over St. George this season.
Caughey (8-5) picked up a win for the first time since August 7th; the complete game shutout lowering his league-best ERA to 2.51...Abbott (5-5) pitched well through seven innings but was still saddled with the loss. Boggs led the Outlaws offense with a 3-for-5 night at the plate, while Silverman and Garrison picked up two hits apiece...Lemon had two of the three Roadrunners hits as St. George was blanked for the first time all year. Saturday's loss, combined with Long Beach's 7-6 win in Fullerton over the Orange County Flyers, officially eliminated St. George from playoff contention as they fell to 24-19 in the second half and 42-45 overall; the Outlaws improved to 19-24 in the second half and 34-51 on the year. The regular season comes to a close for both teams Sunday as Chico goes for the series sweep - right-hander Berek Fasking (2-4) will get the start for the Outlaws, with Monte Mansfield (5-2 with St. George, 7-2 overall) will be on the mound for the Roadrunners. Game time is 6:05pm... hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
