Orange County Flyers News Release
Despite both teams being in the playoffs, the Orange County Flyers and the Long Beach Armada continued their rivalry to end the regular season.
The game was dominated by pitching until the ninth as the Flyers scored six to cruise to a 10-2 victory Sunday evening at Blair Field in Long Beach.
But before the run support came, Jeremy Zick dealt in what was his best outing of the year, a seven inning, five strikeout performance while allowing just one run to improve to 5-7 on the year.
One player who was hitting all game was Jeff LaRue. LaRue was a solid 4-5 with two runs scored to assure himself a .300 plus batting average on the year.
The Armada jumped out first, scoring in the second before Terry Mermer came up with a timely double to plate two and the Flyers never looked back.
Andrew Layfield was tagged with the loss for Long Beach as his control became a problem and his five walks lead to the two O.C. runs.
The Flyers finish the season with a franchise record 51 wins the second most total in GBL history.
The two teams will get Monday off before the Southern Division Championship Series begins Tuesday at Blair Field with Jesse Smith and Seth Etherton the scheduled starters.
