Odessa Jackalopes News Release
WICHITA FALLS, TX - In their first trip to Kay Yeager Coliseum this season, the Odessa Jackalopes fell by a final score of 6-2 to the Wichita Falls Wildcats on Friday night in Wichita Falls, Texas. With the loss, Odessa's first-ever defeat at Kay Yeager Coliseum, the Jacks fell to 5-28-2 overall this season and with 12 points, remain alone in sixth place in the NAHL's South Division standings.
After a scoreless opening period, the Wildcats opened up a 2-0 lead in the second on even-strength goals from Chris Knudson at 5:17 and Colin Staub ten minutes later. Odessa's response was swift, as Anthony Olguin extended his goal-scoring streak to three games at 15:30 on an even-strength tally assisted by Lawrence Cornellier and Matt Montemurro, but Wichita Falls countered with three unanswered goals, spanning the end of the second period and the beginning of the third, to extend their lead to 5-1.
Entering Friday's game, the Jacks were one of just five NAHL teams without a shorthanded goal to their credit this season, but Cornellier solved that problem at 11:46 of the third, when he created a turnover on the Odessa blue line, used his speed to create a breakaway chance and stashed a slick, unassisted, backhand goal past Wildcat netminder Evan Cowley to draw the Jacks within three.
A late goal from Nick Farmer at 17:31 of the third iced the game for Wichita Falls and extended Odessa's losing streak to seven games. Nick Deery was solid in net for the Jacks, stopping 41 of the 47 shots he faced to fall to 3-5-0 overall on the season.
Next up for the Jackalopes, it's a Saturday rematch with the 'Cats with the opening faceoff set for 7:15 pm at Kay Yeager Coliseum.
