Fort Worth Cats News Release
The McAllen Thunder defeated the Fort Worth Cats 5-1 on Sunday evening at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX.
Starter Brian Murphy picked up the win for the Thunder after pitching five innings and only allowing one run on six hits. Murphy also walked two batters and struck out five.
James Giulietti suffered the loss for the Cats. The southpaw went six innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, one being a three-run homerun from McAllen shortstop Nathan Tomaszewski. Kurt Houck threw four shutout innings to earn the save. Houck only allowed two hits to the Cats and struck out three.
RJ Harris was a surprising struggle for the Cats. Harris had his debut in the leadoff spot and went 0-for-5 and had a hat trick of strikeouts. Despite his performance, Harris is still batting .429.
The Cats' loss can't be blamed on not having opportunities. Fort Worth left eleven on base including a bases loaded situation with one out in the fourth that the Cats blew. Shortstop Scott Dalrymple attributed the high number to not being able to string hits together.
Dalrymple and fellow backstop Derek Marshall led the offense for the Cats. Marshall batted 2-for-3 to improve his team leading average to .500. Dalrymple, normally the backup, got the start at shortstop and was 2-for-4 and knocked in his teams only run.
"I just want to do anything I can to help the team. I've played a lot of infield before." Dalrymple said.
The other hot story for the Cats is center fielder Randall Thorpe who has strung together a few SportsCenter Top 10 worthy plays in the past two nights.
"That's my favorite thing to do out there is to go out and shank fly balls" Thorpe said, "I love it just as much as the fans do." Thorpe finished the night 2-for-4 with a double and is batting .429 in his first 2 games.
McAllen's top hitter on the night was designated hitter Luis Blanco who finished with three singles and an RBI.
"I've been working on my hands" said Blanco.
Blanco's hands along with team chemistry and a focus on getting balls up the middle were the keys to the Thunder's success tonight, according to Blanco. The Thunder picked up their first win of the season and are 1-4. The Cats record falls to 3-2 on the year. The Thunder and Cats face off again for the second game of their four game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at LaGrave Field.
