Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
SAN ANGELO,TX - The San Angelo Colts defeated the Abilene Prairie Dogs 5-1 on the strength of 5 runs in the second and third innings to earn their 5th straight win to start the season.
Woods Fines' first professional start since 2008 started off well, but it was only a matter of time until the Colts bats warmed up. In the bottom of the second inning Josh Banda pulled a 1-0 pitch out of the yard down the left-field line to give San Angelo a 3-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
In the third inning, JJ Sherrill started the inning with a base-hit then Daryl Jones worked a walk. Fines came back to get Landon Camp to fly out to left and strike out Cory Patton, but hit Jason Crosland with a 1-1 pitch. Jamal Walton stroked a base hit to through the left side of the infield to plate the Colts' 4th and 5th runs.
Despite the five runs surrendered by Woods Fines, he pitched well overall in five innings. Fines allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5. Fines retired the Colts in order in the first and fourth innings and danced around trouble in the 5th before heading for the showers.
The Prairie Dogs got some excellent work out of the bullpen from Todd Weldon and Billy Petrick. Weldon entered in the 6th inning and retired the Colts in order. In the 7th the Colts threatened to add to their 4-run lead when Jason Crosland came to the plate. Weldon retired him on a pop out to 1B Kyle Nichols.
Billy Petrick pitched his second clean inning of the young season in the 8th, the only base runner coming on a tough luck error on 2B Reggie Williams. Williams charged Adam De La Garza's slowly hit grounder and it got under his glove after it hit the lip of the infield. It was Williams' fourth error in the last two games.
The Prairie Dogs got their only offense on a solo home run from Joe Weik in the second inning. Weik hit his second home run of the season out to left-field.
Abilene and San Angelo will meet again on Monday night at Walt Driggers field on the campus of McMurry University at 7:05pm. Live coverage can be heard on 106.9 KLGD and on Abileneprairiedogs.com.
