Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN- The Gary South Shore RailCats started fast but could not finish off the St. Paul Saints Saturday night at US Steel Yard in a 2-1 loss. Dustin Crenshaw was a hard luck loser for the second time in three games working 7.0IP to drop to (5-4) on the season.

For the second night in a row the RailCats scored in the first thanks to an RBI single from Zac Mitchell who brought home Drew Martinez. Martinez singled off of starter Drew Gay then stole second before sliding ahead of the tag of Jake Taylor on the RBI single. Gay settled down and was able to retire Ryan Babineau and Craig Maddox to get himself out of the inning without any further damage.

From that point forward it was smooth sailing for Gay as the RailCats struggled to find an answer for him. Gay set the RailCats down in order in both the second and third innings, including a streak in which he retired 10 consecutive batters. In the top of the fourth, Henry Wrigley led off with a solo home run off RailCats starter Dustin Crenshaw, knotting the game at 1-1. After Crenshaw retired Angelo Songco and Jake Taylor, Brandon Tripp was hit by a pitch. He later stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Crenshaw then walked Joey Becker, putting runners at the corners with two outs before getting Sam Maus to ground out to short to escape a jam.

In the bottom of the sixth, the RailCats were finally able to apply some pressure on Gay as Babineau and Maddox were both hit by pitches to put runners at first and second with one out. However, the RailCats failed to capitalize as Wally Backman, Jr. grounded into an inning ending double play. Tripp led off the top of the seventh with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Becker. Maus singled, moving Tripp to third and Jared McDonald flew out to center field, scoring Tripp and giving St. Paul a 2-1 lead.

The bullpen took over in the seventh inning for St. Paul and it was solid, holding the lead for their starter. The RailCats were retired in order in the seventh by Mike Mehlich and he stayed in for the eighth, holding the lead at 2-1. Maddox led off the bottom of the ninth for the RailCats and hit a line drive to shallow left field that looked to be a base hit. Unfortunately for the RailCats, Tripp made a diving catch to rob Maddox and the RailCats went quietly to end the game as St. Paul held on for a 2-1 victory.

The two teams will finish up the three game set Sunday afternoon with Stephen Hiscock starting for the RailCats against Ben Hughes for the Saints. The game will be broadcasted on WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com with the first pitch scheduled for 2:10.
