Fort Worth Cats News Release
The Fort Worth Cats announced today that Carroll Beringer and Bobby Bragan will join Carl Erskine in the initial class of the Cats Hall of Fame - known as the Legend of LaGrave. The trio will be honored May 19 in a pre-game ceremony before the Cats game against Lincoln at LaGrave Field.
Beringer amassed 65 victories in seven seasons including a 1950 season in which he went 6-2 with a team-best 1.63 ERA. Beringer also won 19 games for the 1959 Victoria Rosebuds and was voted Pitcher of the Year in the Texas League. He later became the pitching coach for long time friend Danny Ozark at Philadelphia. Beringer was also a coach with the Dodgers.
Bragan was the player/manager of the Fort Worth Cats from 1948-52. The Cats won the regular season championship in the Texas League in '48 and '49 and qualified for post-season play in four of his five years in Fort Worth. He later managed the Pirates, Indians and Braves, both in Milwaukee and Atlanta. Bragan began his playing career with the Philadelphia Phillies before moving on to the Brooklyn Dodgers.
The Cats earlier this month announced that Carl Erskine would be the Legend's first member. He posted a combined 25-11 record with the Cats in 1948 and '49. He was the team's Opening Day starter against Oklahoma City in '48 and was called up by the Brooklyn Dodgers in mid-July. Erskine would go on to become an integral part of Brooklyn's "Boys of Summer" teams that won six pennants in 10 years and the World Series in '55. He pitched two no-hitters during a major league career that included 122 victories.
