Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - The Cubs have called-up catcher Welington Castillo from single-A Daytona. Castillo, who had a thumb injury, had been getting his at-bats as the DH in Daytona while recovering from the minor injury that prevented him from catching on a daily basis.

Castillo hit .255 with 17 doubles, and 13 home runs, and 59 RBI in 69 games with Iowa last season. He was also a .300 hitter with four doubles and a home run in seven games (20 at-bats) when he was called-up to Chicago in August last year.

Iowa has also activated right-handed pitcher Jay Jackson today. Jackson, who remained in Mesa after Spring Training broke, was slowed by a sore right shoulder. He went 11-8 with a 4.63 ERA in 25 starts for the I-Cubs last year. He led the team in innings pitched (157.1) and strikeouts (119). Jackson is slated to start tonight's game against Albuquerque.

Two corresponding moves have also been made by the Chicago Cubs. Pitcher Jake Muyco was released and INF Jonathan Mota has been placed on the DL. Muyco had a 18.00 ERA with no record in two appearances (5.0 innings). Mota was hitting .263 with two doubles and a home run in seven games to start the year.
