Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - A night after surrendering double-digit runs, the Biloxi Shuckers (53-52, 19-19 2nd Half) held the Rocket City Trash Pandas (61-56, 20-18 2nd Half) to just one run on five hits in a 3-1 victory on Saturday night at MGM Park.
RHP Victor Castañeda (W, 3-5) got the start for the Shuckers and worked a 1-2-3 first. The righty allowed his only run of the contest on a solo home run to Jeremiah Jackson in the second, putting Rocket City up 1-0.
Biloxi tied the game in the home half of the fourth. Cam Devanney reached on a fielding error by Zach Neto and Thomas Dillard followed with a walk, his league-leading 70th of the year, putting two men on base for Felix Valerio. The Shuckers' second baseman skipped a ball up the middle of the diamond that got past Neto, allowing Devanney to race home and level the contest at 1-1.
Castañeda pitched out of a jam in the top of the fifth. Zach Humphreys singled to start the frame and was sacrificed to second by Torii Hunter Jr. A walk to Kevin Maitan put two men on base but Castañeda struck out Bryce Teodosio for the second out. A free pass to Livan Soto loaded up the bases before Neto popped out in foul territory, ending the threat.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Shuckers moved in front for good. Jason Lopez singled against RHP Mason Erla (L, 4-3) at the beginning of the inning but was cancelled out on a fielder's choice by Corey Ray. Andruw Monasterio followed with a single to left, one of his three hits on the night, before Garrett Whitley singled home Ray with a base hit to left, putting Biloxi up 2-1.
The Shuckers added on another run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run to right by Dillard, his tenth of the year, pushing their advantage to 3-1. Out of the bullpen, RHP Luis Contreras (H, 4) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in a scoreless seventh and RHP Harold Chirino (H, 3) worked around a single and a walk to pitch a scoreless eighth. RHP Cam Robinson (S, 4) was tasked with the ninth and retired the side in order to lock down his Minor League leading 23rd save of the year.
Biloxi concludes their six-game series with the Trash Pandas on Sunday evening at MGM Park. LHP Nick Bennett (6-9, 4.89) gets the start for Biloxi opposite Trash Pandas RHP Chase Silseth (3-0, 1.91) for a 5:05 pm first pitch.
