North Carolina FC News Release
Cary, NC (Wednesday, July 9th, 2008) - The Cary Railhawks U-23 team welcome one of England's oldest soccer clubs on Thursday July 10th at 7:30 PM at WakeMed Soccer Park. Burnley FC of England's Coca Cola Championship Division will face the RailHawks PDL team in an international exhibition that is certain to excite Triangle soccer fans of all ages. Tickets ($10 and $15) are still available at the LGFCU Box Office, by calling 919-859-KICK (5425) or by visiting www.carolinarailhawks.com. In addition if fans wear any soccer jersey they will receive a free ticket to the match and if they wear a European jersey they will receive two free tickets to Thursday's match.
"We're very excited to be here," said Burnley FC head Coach Owen Coyle. "The Railhawks organization has bent over backwards to make us feel at home. We've seen the Cary Railhawks play Tuesday night and they are an impressive very driven team. We are looking forward to a tough game in an impressive facility."
Burnley, founded in 1882, are one of the founding 12 members of the original Football League, dating back to 1888. They have twice won the English First Division (1921 and 1960), now known as the Premier League and they are one of only two clubs in England to have won all four domestic divisional titles. They play at Turf Moor in the second tier of English football and are currently the longest serving club in that division, having been promoted to this level in 2000. In recent seasons they have famously defeated Premier League clubs Liverpool (2004/05 FA Cup), Aston Villa (2004/05 League Cup) and Tottenham Hotspur (2002/03 League Cup). Burnley is also entertaining the opportunity of partnering with a local United States Club.
"It's a great thing to have our players exposed to professional clubs as they will become professional athletes soon," said Cary Railhawks Head Coach Dewan Bader. "We will definitely make it a good game."
The Cary RailHawks are hot off a 3-2 victory against the Carolina Dynamo on Tuesday night and fans will not want to miss Wake Forest's Zach Schilawski and Corben Bone, UNC's Michael Callahan and Brian Shriver or Duke's Darrius Barnes take on one of the oldest clubs in England's soccer history.
The RailHawks USL-1 team is on the road this week as they travel to Minnesota on July 11th and Vancouver on July 13th. All Carolina RailHawks matches can be seen on www.USLLive.com. The Carolina RailHawks Women return to W-League action on Saturday, July 12th as they host the Tampa Bay Hellenic. Tickets for all these events are available at the LGFCU Box Office, by calling 919-859-KICK, at all Ticketmaster outlets or by visiting www.carolinarailhawks.com.
