Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

FARGO, ND- Kes Carter sent the third pitch of the bottom of the 9th inning over the fence at Newman Outdoor Field to complete a Fargo-Moorhead (26-24) comeback and hand the Gary SouthShore RailCats (26-24) a 3-2 loss.

The RedHawks hit two home runs to overcome a brilliant performance by RailCat starting pitcher Zach Staniewicz. The RailCat offense recorded eight hits, but struck out eight times and left eight runners on base.

Staniewicz signed with Gary SouthShore today and provided an excellent spot start. The knuckleballer went seven innings and allowed just one run on seven hits.

The one run came on a Josh Mazzola home run in the bottom of the 4th inning. That solo shot opened the scoring in the game. Staniewicz was helped by two double plays turned by the RailCat defense.

The RailCats evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the 5th. Matt Petrone led off the inning with a walk and advanced on a single by John Holland. He came around to score on a two-out base hit by EJ Devarie.

The offense continued to produce in the 6th. Brennan Metzger started things with a single. Alex Crosby sent the speedy Metzger home with a double in the next at bat. It was Crosby's third double in the last two games.

Manager Greg Tagert brought reliever Andy Roberts in for the bottom of the 8th inning with the score 2-1. The RedHawks manufactured a run using a triple and a single to even the score. Keury De La Cruz earned the RBI, his 39th of the season, which puts him at fifth best in the American Association.

The RailCats stranded a leadoff single by Devarie in the 9th to set up Carter and the RedHawks. The walk-off was Carter's fifth homer of the season and the second allowed by Roberts.

The Lincoln Saltdogs beat the Texas Airhogs to extend their Central Division lead to two games over the RailCats. Gary SouthShore is 3-7 in their last 10 games.

The RedHawks and RailCats are back at it tomorrow night with first pitch from Fargo at 7:02 PM. Coverage begins at 6:38 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
