Roanoke Dazzle News Release
ROANOKE, Va. â Matt Carroll broke multiple NBDL records Wednesday night as he scored 43 points to lead the Roanoke Dazzle over the Florida Flame 125-110. Elevating the Dazzle (17-10) into sole possession of second place and just a half game behind first-place Columbus, Roanoke put up their second highest score of the season with the help of not only Carroll but also Isiah Victor's 30 points and Cory Alexander's 23.
Even with fellow 3-point threat Sung-Yoon Bang out with a concussion, Carroll was still able to drain three 3-pointers along with knocking down an additional 16 field goals. Breaking an previous Roanoke record set by Marque Perry last season with 40 points, Carroll also claims the highest point total for a single game this year in the entire NBDL.
"Our guys didn't play defense on Carroll," said Head Coach Dennis Johnson, "but I know Matt very well and I know Matt can shoot the lights out of the ball."
Trading baskets back and forth for most of the game, the Flame (7-23) were only down 92-89 with 1:14 left in the third quarter when recent NBA Gatorade call-up Smush Parker was ejected from the game. The Dazzle then went on a 14-4 run ignited by the dynamic duo of Carroll and Victor as they scored twelve points during a five minute period.
"When they lost Smush, that really hurt them," said Dazzle Head Coach Kent Davison. "But good teams take advantage of things like that and we took advantage of it."
Roanoke had two players with double-doubles, Isiah Victor posting 30 points and 12 rebounds and Cory Alexander contributing 23 points and 14 assists. James Thomas and Sherman Gay also had double digit scoring affairs themselves with 13 and 11 respectively.
"Offensively we were good all night," said Davison. "Defensively we weren't good until the fourth quarter." This was seen in Florida's final statistics as they had six players in double digit figures. Hiram Fuller's double-double led the charge with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Kirk Haston tallied 22, while Darius Rice put up another 16. Byron Mouton helped out with 12, Carl English added 11, and Smush Parker scored 10 along with 13 assists.
Roanoke faces Huntsville on the road next Tuesday, February 15 at the Von Braun game time 11 a.m. For more information log on to www.nbdl.com or visit www.roanokedazzle.com.
