Fayetteville Patriots News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. â With less than 20 seconds left on the clock, the Riverdragon Derrick Zimmerman stole the ball and ended the play with a two-handed dunk that helped seal his team's victory, 91-88. The Patriots, who had control for most of the game, managed to hold the Riverdragons to just 12 points at the end of the first quarter. Columbus came back strong in the second half though and stole the lead during the fourth quarter. The Riverdragons were led by Kevin Braswell who provided 16 points and five assists. Tang Hamilton led all scorers with 17 points, but it just wasn't enough to lead his team to victory.
Mike King, who had 13 points and five rebounds for the night, tied the game for the Patriots at 85 with 1:20 left on the clock. Omar Cook then fouled Derrick Zimmerman on the three-point line. Zimmerman made both free throws and gave the Riverdragons the lead 88-85.
"We should have put them away. They got back in and we gave them confidence," Omar Cook said.
Columbus had five players in double figures. Derrick Zimmerman and Mike Benton had 15 points apiece, while Reed Rawlings contributed 14 points and seven rebounds. Neil Yanke also provided 13 points for the Riverdragons.
Tang Hamilton's 17 points included a three-pointer at the buzzer that brought the final score to 91-88. David Young was the second leading scorer for the Patriots with 15 points. Ernest Brown provided 13 points, and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje had 10 rebounds. Omar Cook finished one assist shy of another double-double with 10 points and nine assists.
"It's a full 10-man effort I explained to the guys coming off the bench. You can see how the game is going," Head Coach Mike Brown said. "You have to be focused and with energy. We just didn't do that."
The Patriots (9-21) have a week off before traveling to Asheville to take on the Altitude on Friday, February 17. Game time is 7:30 p.m. For more information, log onto nbdl.com.
