Buffalo Destroyers News Release
(BUFFALO, NY)- After having solid rookie campaigns with the Buffalo Destroyers last season, the team announced they have resigned DS Dwaine Carpenter and OS Jarrail Jackson.
Carpenter (6-2, 215, North Carolina A&T) has emerged as one of the top young defensive players in the Arena Football League. He had an outstanding season in 2002 finishing second on the team 64 tackles. He was also second with three interceptions and 11 pass breakups. Carp broke seven Destroyers team records including pass defenses in a game with five week nine at Toronto and interception return yards by a rookie as well as a season and career with 65. He was named Game MVP week nine at Toronto with a league high 10.5 tackles (10 solo), four pass defenses and an interception. He was also named the AFL's ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his performance at Toronto. Carpenter led the Rochester Brigade of af2 with eight interceptions in 2001, returning one for a touchdown. He was the Brigade's second leading tackler with 75 stops and broke up 33 passes.
Jackson (5-10, 180, Oklahoma) spent much of last season behind Lamont Cooper on the depth chart but played well when given the opportunity. He appeared in two games and had eight receptions for 126 yards and four touchdowns. His first career reception was also his first career touchdown. He had a career high three touchdown catches week 14 at LA. He played defense for the first time in his career in LA recording four tackles. He also led the team with 34 kick returns for 747 yards and five touchdowns.
"Both Dwaine and Jarrail are great young players who have a lot of potential," said Destroyers head coach Ron Selesky. "It's nice to see guys who played in af2 come up to this level and have some success as rookies. Both guys will play an integral role in our success in 2003.
