Carolina Ready for Hurricane Jack

Waterloo, Iowa - Former Waterloo Black Hawk Jack Drury has joined the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes after finalizing a three-year contract announced by Carolina Wednesday.

The Hurricanes selected Drury following his second season in Waterloo, using the 42nd overall pick during the 2018 NHL Draft. In the winter of 2017/18, the Winnetka, Illinois native had produced 65 points (24 goals, 41 assists) in 56 regular season games, leading the Black Hawks offensively and ranking fourth overall in the United States Hockey League. Beginning on November 22, 2017 and extending through February 16th, Drury produced at least one point in 23 consecutive appearances, finishing the run with 14 goals and 18 assists. A valuable penalty killer, solid defensive forward, and reliable faceoff man, the then-18-year-old wrapped up the campaign tied for third on the team with a +14 plus/minus differential. As an all-around special teams ace, Drury paced the USHL with five shorthanded goals and tied for top league honors with 12 power play goals. The Black Hawks completed the 2017/18 schedule with 84 standings points and the Anderson Cup regular season championship, as Drury produced game-winning goals seven times.

Overall during his USHL career, Drury played in 100 regular season contests, with 28 goals, 49 assists, and a +18 plus/minus mark. In an additional 16 playoff games, he notched three goals and two assists.

From Waterloo, Drury moved on to the Harvard Crimson, where he averaged better than a point-per-game (63 points in 60 games) as an underclassman. With the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting his NCAA career, Drury spent 2020/21 playing in Sweden for the Vaxjo Lakers; he produced 30 points in 41 games and was recognized as a finalist for the SHL's Rookie of the Year Award. Adding another 11 points in the postseason, Drury's Lakers were the league's playoff champions. Following the season, he represented the United States and won a bronze medal during the IIHF Men's World Championships in Latvia.

Two of Drury's former teammates have also signed their initial NHL contracts in recent months. After the NCAA hockey season ended, Nick Swaney inked a deal with the Minnesota Wild. Days later, Jackson Cates joined the Philadelphia Flyers, where he made his NHL debut before the 2020/21 schedule concluded.

A total of 13 Black Hawks appeared in the NHL last season, including another of Drury's Waterloo teammates, Mikey Anderson, who spent his rookie season with the Los Angeles Kings. Thirty-one Black Hawks alumni have skated in at least one NHL game during their careers. That includes Andrew Alberts, the only former Waterloo player to take the ice for Carolina. Alberts was a member of the Hurricanes in 2009/10. This season, the Carolina organization also included Hawks alum David Cotton, who was assigned to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League.
