
Carolina RailHawks Host USL-2's Real Maryland in Second Round of US Open Cup

Cary, NC (Saturday, June 14th, 2008) - The Carolina RailHawks will host the Real Maryland Monarchs of the USL Second Division on Tuesday June 24th at 7:30 PM at WakeMed Soccer Park in Round Two of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The Real Maryland Monarchs are a USL-2 expansion team and enter the second round of the US Open Cup after a 3-2 overtime win over the NY Pancyprian Freedom amateur team. They are led by Salvadorian superstars Ron Cerritos and Dennis Alas who will look to make an impression on the Hispanic community in the Triangle.
The RailHawks, who went all the way to the Open Cup semifinals in 2007 losing to the eventual champions New England Revolution in double overtime, will want to build on the 1-0 victory over the PDL's Brooklyn Knights and continue the quest for the oldest trophy of its kind in the United States. Should the RailHawks advance to the third round they will host Major League Soccer's Kansas City Wizards on Tuesday July 1st.
The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is one of the oldest tournaments of its kind in the World and allows amateur teams to measure up against professional teams in a competitive setting. This year's field includes 40 teams including eight MLS teams, eight USL-first division teams, eight USL-second division teams and 16 amateur teams from the PDL and USASA.
The RailHawks are on the road most of the month of June starting in Miami on Saturday, June 14th then on to Rochester on Friday, June 20th and Montreal on Sunday June 22nd. All road matches can be viewed live and on demand on the USL's broadband channel www.USLLive.com. The RailHawks will return home for the second round of the US Open Cup on Tuesday, June 24th against the Real Maryland Monarchs of USL-2. The next regular season home game for the Carolina RailHawks will be on Friday, June 27th as the RailHawks host the Portland Timbers at WakeMed Soccer Park at 8:00 PM and the RailHawks Women host the Hampton Roads Piranhas on Saturday June 28th at 7:30 PM.
