North Carolina FC News Release
CARY, NC - The Carolina RailHawks (NASL) host the New England Revolution (MLS) on Wednesday, June 15 at 7:30 pm ET in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at WakeMed Soccer Park. The winner of this match will advance to the Round of 16 to be played on Wednesday, June 29.
"We take the competition very seriously; maybe more seriously than others," RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke said. "We want to get as far as we can and we want to play against the big boys. We want to do ourselves proud."
Carolina advanced to the fourth round after defeating in-state rival the Charlotte Independence 5-0 in extra time on June 1 at WakeMed Soccer Park. After 90 scoreless minutes, Billy Schuler (2), Jonathon Orlando, Brian Shriver and Nazmi Albadawi all found the back of the net. With this fixture, the RailHawks broke the record for the most goals scored by a single team in extra time in the Open Cup MLS Era.
More recently, the RailHawks played their final NASL Spring Season match at Indy Eleven on Saturday, June 11. Indy defeated Carolina 4-1, resulting in a seventh place finish for the RailHawks in the NASL standings (4W-3D-4L).
The RailHawks have defeated six MLS teams in the Open Cup. Most notably, the team beat the Los Angeles Galaxy three years in a row. The Chicago Fire and Chivas USA are also on Carolina's list of MLS victims.
Wednesday's match is the Revolution's first game in the 2016 US Open Cup, as Major League Soccer teams enter the tournament in the fourth round. New England currently sits in eighth place in MLS with a record of 3W-7D-4L. In their most recent game, the Revolution defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-1 on May 28.
This will be the second meeting in competition between the RailHawks and the Revolution. The first time the two teams met was in the Semi-Finals of the 2007 US Open Cup during the RailHawks' inaugural season. The Revolution won 2-1 in extra time and went on to win the tournament for the first time in team history.
Carolina begins the NASL Fall Season on Saturday, July 2 at Minnesota United FC at 7:30pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 919-459-8144 or online at CarolinaRailHawks.com.
