New Jersey Cardinals News Release
Daniel Nelson ripped a 2-out RBI single in the bottom of the 11th as the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) defeated the Batavia Muckdogs (Philadelphia Phillies) 4-3 Monday night at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey. The Cards improved to a season-high three games over .500 at 25-22, while the Muckdogs fell to 17-28. Michael Repole worked 3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for his 4th victory and first baseman Adam Rodgers had two hits, including a two-run home run for New Jersey, who have won both meetings with Batavia this season. Ronald Hill fell to 2-3 with the loss.
The Muckdogs jumped out to an early lead with 2 runs in the top of the first. Left fielder Jeremey Slayden and second baseman Clay Harris lined consecutive one out singles, before Michael Costanzo walked to load the bases. Cards starter Mitchell Boggs got designated hitter Welinson Baez to bounce a ground ball to first, but Rodgersthrow to second went wild allowing Slayden to score and Baez to reach. Mark Edwards then lifted a fly ball that scored Harris, but Boggs worked out of further trouble by getting Lou Marson to ground out.
The Cardinals quickly answered back in their half of the first with 2 runs to tie the score. Carlos De La Cruz laced a one out double, and after Tyler Greene struck out, Rodgers hit a 2-run home run to left field to extend his hitting streak to 6 games.
New Jersey took the lead in the third on Greenes RBI groundout, but Batavia pulled even in the 4th. With two outs, Jordan Szabo singled and moved to 2nd when third baseman Randy Roth threw wildly on P.J. Antoniatos groundball. Szabo scored one batter later when Julian Williams lined a single to center.
Both bullpens held the offenses in check until the bottom of the eight when the Cardinals loaded the bases with a leadoff single by Rodgers and walks to catcher Brandon Yarbrough and Matt Wilkerson. But Patrick Overholt struck out Yonathan Sivira and Jose Delgado to end the Cardinalsthreat and keep the game tied at 3.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the bottom of the 11th. With one out, Carlos De La Cruz, who was a home run short of the cycle, tripled to the gap in right field. After Greene struck out, Nelson ripped a 2 strike fastball into right field to plate De La Cruz.
The teams return to action Tuesday, August 9, to complete their three game series. Game time is scheduled for 7:15. The Cardinals are set to send Kyle Sadlowski (0-2, 5.63) to the mound, while Batavia looks to counter with Kyle Kendrick (3-2, 3.63). Tuesdays game also features a Coco Crisp Bobble Head giveaway, courtesy of Shop Rite and the New Jersey Herald.
