Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Arkansas Travelers used another strong pitching performance to drop the Springfield Cardinals for a second straight game, topping the Redbirds by a score of 7-2 on Monday night at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.
Travs' starter Tim Kiely, called up from the California League earlier in the day, made quite a splash in his Texas League debut, sending the Cards to their fourth straight loss with a complete-game effort.
Kiely (1-0) lost a shut-out in the ninth inning, but held the Cards to just two runs on three hits over nine innings, fanning 13 along the way.
Daryl Jones walked to open the ninth and Tyler Henley followed with a two-run homer to right field, his fourth. That would be one of the few mistakes Kiely would make, as he got the next three hitters, including a strikeout of Mark Hamilton to seal the complete game.
Arkansas capitalized on Springfield mistakes early, chasing starter Brad Furnish (2-2) just seven batters into the game. Furnish struggled with his command, walking three batters, all of which would score. Back-to-back walks to open the game would both come around, as the Travs took a 2-0 lead in the first.
In the second, Furnish again walked the lead-off hitter Wil Ortiz, then allowed a single to Brandon Florence. That would be all for the left-hander, as Brandon Dickson came out of the Springfield bullpen just two batters into the second inning. Dickson gave up an RBI single to Jay Caligiuri, putting the Travs in front 3-0.
Dickson would get out of the second down 3-0, but thanks to two errors in the bottom of the third, he gave up two unearned runs, as Arkansas built a 5-0 advantage.
Eduardo Sanchez and Marco Gonzalez followed Dickson, by each working a scoreless inning.
The defense let Springfield down in the eighth, as Francisco Samuel allowed two unearned runs, stemming from two Cardinals' errors in the inning, as the Travs took a commanding 7-0 lead.
Springfield (34-28), now just one game up on Northwest Arkansas with eight to play, looks to get back on track on Tuesday, sending Trey Hearne (5-1) to the mound against Arkansas right-hander Jordan Walden (1-2). Game time from Dickey-Stephens Park on Tuesday will be 7:10pm.
