August 21, 2004 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
New Jersey Cardinals News Release
Just when it looked like they were down and out, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) pulled off an 11th inning rally to down the Brooklyn Cyclones (New York Mets) and pull within 1.0 game of first place with only two weeks remaining in the season.
In the bottom of the 11th inning, with one out and the Cyclones (33-26) leading, 3-2, Mike Ferris and Cory Taillon drew back-to-back walks. Tim Cantu, who was 3-for-3 on the night, immediately followed with a run scoring single to left field and the game was tied. On the very next play, Matt Shepherd hit a sharp liner that fell in for a hit to center. Cory Taillon raced home and slid in just ahead of the tag to give the Cards the 4-3 victory.
Mike Gross (1-0) picked up the win for the Cards, while Celso Rondon (1-1) was tagged with the loss after blowing the save opportunity. Tim Cantu led the offensive attack, recording 2 RBI to go with his 3 hits. Levi Webber also chipped in 2 hits and an RBI. Making his first appearance of the season for the Cardinals, Eric Haberer threw 7 solid innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 7 hits while striking out 5. Reliever Jack Baird threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to allow the Cardinals a chance to win in extra innings.
The Cardinals are now tied with the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Devil Rays), who were rained out tonight against Williamsport (Pittsburgh Pirates), for the wild card lead. The Renegades and Cardinals play a key three-game set beginning Friday night at 7:15 pm at Skylands Park.
Sunday the Cardinals travel to Brooklyn, and Monday the two teams return to Skylands Park for their final meeting of the season. KFC and the New Jersey Herald sponsor Kids Eat Free. The Cards then travel to Lowell (Boston Red Sox) on Tuesday for a 3-game set against the Spinners and to Hudson Valley on Friday for the opener of a 3-game series with the Renegades. They return home to Skylands Park on Saturday. The baseball giveaway sponsored by Phils Ford that had been scheduled for todays game has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 2, when the Cards take on the Aberdeen Ironbirds.
