Cards Hammer Travs 11-4

June 14, 2005 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

Nine different Cardinals had hits on Tuesday night, as the Springfield Cardinals hammered the Arkansas Travelers by a final of 11-4 at Ray Winder Field. The Springfield offense, which two nights ago set a team-high for runs with 13, picked up a season-high 20 base hits on the night.

Kevin Estrada became just the second Cards player this year to record a four-hit game, going 4-5 on the night. Tyler Minges fell a double shy of the cycle, going 3-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Juan Diaz hit another mammoth home run, a solo shot to straight-away center field that cleared a 45-foot high wall, estimated at well over 450 feet. Andy Schutzenhofer also went yard for the first time since early April, just his second of the year.

Randy Leek (7-3) tied his season-best with eight innings, allowing just two runs on six hits. Leek did walk a season-high four batters, but still picked up his team-leading seventh win of the year, good enough for second in the Texas League.

The Cards took the early lead in the first inning against Travs starter Tim Bittner (1-6). Shaun Boyd, who had three hits on the night, singled to right field to open the game, then scored on a triple by Tyler Minges. Juan Diaz would ground into a double play later in the inning, scoring Minges to make it 2-0.

Springfield added four more in the second, taking a 6-0 lead. Papo Bolivar opened the inning with a double, then scored from third on Mike McCoy's sac fly to right field. McCoy was just called up from Palm Beach after Milko Jaramillo landed on the 7-day DL. Shaun Boyd's RBI single drove home Kevin Estrada to make it 4-0. Tyler Minges capped the inning with a two-run shot to left-center field, his team-leading 11th of the year.

Aaron Herr's RBI double scored Juan Diaz, making it familiar territory with a 7-0 in the third.

Unlike Sunday's game, where the Cards watched the Travs rally from a 7-0 defecit, Springfield would never allow Arkansas to get back in the game. Leek faced his first real challenge in the fifth. With the bases loaded and no one out, Shaun Boyd made a terrific diving catch to take extra bases away from Alberto Callaspo in deep center field. Mike Eylward would tag from third base, but it was the only run Arkansas got in the fifth.

The Cards made it 8-1 in the seventh, as Diaz crushed his eighth homer of the year to straight-away center field off Aaron Pullin of Arkansas. Diaz now has 23 RBIs in 24 games as a Cardinal.

Leading 8-2 in the ninth, the Cards stock-piled more runs against Travs closer Von Stertzbach. Andy Schutzenhofer's two-run shot to right-center made it 10-2. Travis Hanson followed with a double and eventually scored on Aaron Herr's RBI infield single, making it 11-2.

The Travs did score twice in the bottom of the ninth against Cory Doyne, rounding out the scoring at 11-4.

The Cardinals are now a game over the .500 mark at 33-32. With the Tulsa Drillers win on Tuesday night at Wichita, the Tulsa Drillers clinch the first-half East Division title. Stuart Pomeranz takes the mound on Wednesday night in the rubber game of the five-game set at Ray Winder Field in Little Rock. Pomeranz (0-0) will be opposed by lefty Daniel Davidson (5-3). Game time on Wednesday night is 7:10pm. The Cardinals return home to Hammons Field on Thursday, June 23 against the San Antonio Missions. Tickets are always available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
