Cards fly over Cyclones

New Jersey Cardinals News Release


This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones (New York Mets) 9-1 to take the first game of the series. The Cardinals improved to 4-3 on the 2005 season while the loss dropped the Cyclones to 5-2. Michael Repole (2-0) picked up the victory for the Cardinals, while Jorge Reyes (0-1) took the loss.

The Cardinals manufactured the first run of the game in the 2nd inning when Yonathan Sivira singled, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error. Adam Morris followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Sivira. Brooklyn answered back in similar fashion in the top of the 3rd when Armand Gaerlan singled, stole second base, and scored on a two out Jonathan Malo RBI single to right.

New Jersey broke the game open in the bottom of the 3rd when Adam Rodgers smacked a 3 run home run to left field. The Cardinals scored 3 more in the 6th inning, highlighted by Chad Gabriels leadoff double and Sean Dobsons 2 run triple.

Five Cardinals pitchers combined to limit Brooklyn to 1 run on 5 hits with the Cardinals bullpen holding the Cyclones to 2 base runners over the final 6 innings. Michael Gross threw 2 perfect innings.

The Cardinals will travel to Brooklyn on Wednesday to finish the three game set. The teams will finish the suspended game from Monday at 6 pm, with the final game of the series immediately following. The Cardinals will return to Skylands Park on Friday July 1st to take on Staten Island. There will be a massive fireworks show following the game, sponsored by Condit World and The Star Ledger. Game time is scheduled for 7:15 pm.
