Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals got back on track, putting together a solid effort in a 4-1 victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks on Sunday night at Hammons Field.

Lance Lynn won his team-leading fifth decision of the year and Daniel Descalso fell a single shy of the cycle.

Descalso scored three of Springfield's four runs, finishing the game 3-for-4 and missing what would have been the first cycle in franchise history.

Tony Cruz's first-inning home run put the Cards on the board, as they took a 1-0 lead over Corpus Christi starter Wilton Lopez (1-1). The homer for Cruz is his third of the year.

That lead held up until the fourth, when Lynn surrendered a solo shot to Collin DeLome, his league-leading 11th of the year, tying the game at 1-1.

Descalso put the Cards ahead to stay in the bottom of the inning though, driving a ball over the left-field wall, just out of the reach of a leaping left fielder, Drew Locke. His fifth homer of the year put the Cards in front 2-1.

Lynn made that lead stand up, completing his night after six innings, retiring eight of the final nine hitters he faced. Lynn (5-1) allowed a total of one run on three hits, in picking up the win.

In the bottom of the sixth, Matt Arburr knocked in Descalso, who ripped a one-out triple off the left-field wall, making it 3-1.

Descalso capped his night with a one-out double in the eighth, scoring on Tyler Henley's RBI single to center field, giving the Redbirds a 4-1 advantage.

Francisco Samuel took over for Pete Parise in the ninth, after Parise had worked two scoreless frames. Samuel worked a 1-2-3 inning for his 13th save, second in the league.

Thanks to a Tulsa loss in Midland, the Cards (31-23) are now two games up over the Tulsa Drillers (29-25), with just 16 to play in the first half.

The Cards look to make it two of three over the Hooks on Monday night, sending David Kopp (1-0) to the hill against Hooks' right-hander Brad James (1-4). Game time for the final game of the home stand is 7:10pm.
