New Jersey Cardinals News Release

This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals beat the Staten Island Yankees 5-4 in the series finale. The Cardinals improved to 5-7, while the loss dropped the Yankees to 6-4. Nick Webber (1-0) got the win in relief of New Jersey starter Blake Hawksworth, while Staten Island starter Toni Lara (0-2) was charged with the loss.

Taking advantage of Hawksworths early control problems, Staten Island scored once in the top of the first without a hit. After Jose Perez drew a leadoff walk, he reached second on a wild pitch and took third on a passed ball. Kyle Anson then followed with a sacrifice fly to center for the early 1-0 lead. New Jersey was held scoreless until the 4th inning, when they erupted for four runs and sent 10 men to the plate. Left fielder Matt Wilkerson led off the inning with his second home run of the season, and shortstop Casey Rowlett added a two run single later in the inning to give the Cardinals a 4-1 lead. New Jersey tacked on another run in the sixth when Rowletts single to center scored Jose Delgado. Rowlett finished 2-4 with three RBIs.

The Yanks cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh, when Eduardo Nunez ripped an RBI single to right-center to score Reegie Corona, who reached on a one out walk. Staten Island was then held scoreless until the 9th when they scored two runs, but Jonathan Poterson flew out to the warning track in center field to end the game.

Nick Webber picked up the win in relief of Blake Hawksworth, with three innings of work. Matt Trent earned his third save of the year after picking up the final two outs.

The Cardinals will return to Skylands on Sunday Saturday to start a two game set against the Brooklyn Cyclones. Game time is set for 5:00 pm, with Udderly Smooth sponsoring an Udder Cream giveaway night.
