Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
Brandon Buckman's two-run homer off Tip Fairchild in the eighth inning Monday night sealed Springfield's three-game sweep of the Hooks as the Cardinals knocked off Corpus Christi 5-2 at Hammons Field.
Corpus Christi (19-36), having dropped four straight, returns to Whataburger Field on Tuesday night after a 2-4 road trip.
Hooks starter Chance Douglass struck out four and faced the minimum through three.
Springfield broke through in the fourth on Daryl Jones' lead-off home run to right field.
The Cardinals touched Douglass for two more runs in the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Jones and Donovan Solano opened the inning. Douglass bounced back by striking out Buckman, but then hit Mark Shorey with a 1-2 pitch. Jose Martinez promptly chopped a single through the left side, scoring Jones for a 2-0 lead. Brandon Yarbrough completed the rally with a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat.
Douglass (4-9) suffered his sixth-straight loss after surrendering three runs on eight hits over six innings. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
The Hooks responded with two runs in the seventh. Lou Santangelo and pinch hitter Jarred Ball started the scoring with singles to begin the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Wladimir Sutil set the stage for Jonny Ash's RBI grounder to second. A wild pitch during the next at-bat gave Corpus Christi its second tally.
Brandon Dickson (2-1) held the Hooks scoreless through five frames, yielding four hits, while walking two and striking out five.
The Hooks open a seven-game homestand Tuesday night against front-running Midland. The RockHounds' Jason Windsor (2-1) and lefty Andy Van Hekken (5-3) tangle in a 7:05 start.
