Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals grabbed a share of first place in the North Division, completing a three-game sweep of the Corpus Christi Hooks on Monday, by winning 5-2 at Hammons Field. Springfield's fifth straight win, coupled with Northwest Arkansas' sixth straight loss, gives the Cards a piece of first place for the first time since July 25th.

The top two teams in the North Division will meet on Tuesday, as the Cardinals and Naturals open a crucial four-game series at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Arkansas.

Cards' leftfielder Daryl Jones had a big offensive night and Brandon Dickson (2-1) fired five shut-out innings to earn his second win since joining Springfield.

Jones put the Redbirds on the board in the fourth inning, taking Corpus Christi starter Chance Douglass deep over the right field fence for a 1-0 lead. The home run for Jones is his third since joining Springfield and tenth of the year.

Springfield added to their lead in the sixth, as Jones and Donovan Solano opened the inning with back-to-back hits. After Mark Shorey was hit by a pitch one out later, Jose Martinez delivered a bases-loaded single, scoring Jones to make it 2-0. Brandon Yarbrough followed with a sac fly to score Solano, giving Springfield a 3-0 lead against Douglass (4-9).

Corpus Christi's biggest threat against Dickson came against in the first inning, but the Cards' starter stranded runners at second and third by fanning Brian Bogusevic on a called third strike. Dickson worked five scoreless frames, allowing four hits, while striking out five.

Cards' reliever Marco Gonzalez worked a scoreless sixth, but gave up two in the seventh. Jonny Ash's ground ball scored Lou Santangelo, while a wild pitch allowed pinch-hitter Jarred Ball to score, making it a one-run game at 3-2.

Brandon Buckman's second home run since being called up from Palm Beach gave Springfield some cushion, as his two-run shot in the eighth off Corpus Christi reliever Tip Fairchild made it 5-2.

Luis Perdomo gave up a two-out double in the ninth, but fanned Jonny Ash to end it, giving Perdomo his first save in a Springfield uniform.

The Cards hit the road for an important four-game date with Northwest Arkansas on Tuesday, sending Brad Furnish (1-0) to the hill against Naturals' right-hander Dan Cortes (8-4). The Redbirds will return to Hammons Field on Saturday, August 23rd, taking on the Arkansas Travelers and the Tulsa Drillers as part of a seven-game home stand. The final home stand of the regular season includes Baseball Card Set Giveaway, sponsored by Chevy Dealers of the Ozarks on Tuesday, August 26th. Tickets are available for the final home stand of the regular season by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com. Gates open at 5:10pm on Saturday night. The Cards will be home through Monday night, taking on the Corpus Christi Hooks as part of a three-game home series.
