Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, Va. - The Johnson City Cardinals completed a three-game series-sweep of the Danville Braves at American Legion Post 325 Field 4-0 Saturday night for the first time in franchise history dating back to 2005.
In the second, Cardinals first baseman Michael Knox drew a four-pitch walk and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Shortstop Jose Peraza bobbled the ball, but was able to beat left fielder Ronald Castillo to the bag for the first out of the inning. But the Cards rallied for a run with two outs. Knox was driven in on shortstop Cesar Valera's single to open the scoring, 1-0.
Third baseman Carlos Franco singled in the bottom of the fourth inning to break up Cards starter Zachary Petrick's perfect game. But the Braves couldn't capitalize and failed to score.
The Cards cemented their lead in the sixth. After an eight-pitch at-bat, designated hitter Jeremy Schaffer singled and advanced to second on catcher Nick De Santiago's second passed ball. For the second time in the game, the Cards rallied for a run with two outs when third baseman Carson Kelly doubled Schaffer in to make it 2-0. They added an insurance run in the eighth inning to make it 3-0.
Right fielder, Dutch Deol, robbed Braves second baseman Levi Hyams of a game-tying three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. Deol turned right around in the top of the ninth to go yard himself and stake the Cards to a 4-0 lead.
After 66 pitches, Braves starter, Lucas Sims (0-2), on an innings restriction, was lifted in the fourth in favor of left-handed reliever Carlos Perez. Sims pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed one run (earned) on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Perez, in his first appearance since July 22, came out dealing. He pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed one run (unearned) on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Cards got more than a "quality start" from Petrick (3-0). He pitched 6.0 shutout innings of two-hit ball and notched no walks with four strikeouts. Petrick, 2-0 as a reliever, earned his first win tonight as a starter. He remains undefeated on the season.
Tomorrow, the Braves welcome the Pulaski Mariners to town as they kick off the second three-game series in this nine-game home stand. Ernesto Silva will get the ball for the D-Braves and Charles Kaalekahi will head to the mound for the M's. Game time is 4:00 p.m. and gates will open an hour beforehand.
Tickets can be purchased by calling the Ticket Office at (434) 797-3792 or in-person at the ALP 325 Field Box Office (Mon. - Fri., 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.).
