New Jersey Cardinals News Release

This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) defeated the Lowell Spinners in their initial meeting of the season. New Jersey improved to 23-34 as the Spinners fell to 31-23. Mark Michael (1-2) picked up his first win of the season in his 11th outing, while Jarrett Gardner (5-2) took the loss for Lowell. Michael pitched six innings allowing one run on four hits and no walks. Mark Michael set a New Jersey high water mark for the season with 10 punchouts.

Lowell did jump out first, but the Cardinals battled back quickly. It was a carousel for the Cardinals tonight as each hitter enjoyed at least one hit. They scored four runs in the opening frame on five hits, before two scores in the second inning. On fifteen hits, the Cardinals gave Michael a sizable cushion. In the fourth, Omar Pena tripled and Kevin Estrada drove him in on a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 7-1. The Cardinals added two tallies in the fifth inning. Jose Virgil doubled, Joe Mather singled and Matt Pagnozzi tripled for a unique mini-cycle. Two runs scored in the series as the score reached 9-1. Two extra scores in the eighth wrapped up the Cardinals scoring for an 11-2 result.

Kevin Estrada accounted for four runs himself as he drove in one and crossed the plate three times. Billy Schmitt brought home three runs on two hits himself. Jose Virgil had two doubles and Casey Grimm scored twice. The hitting stars were endless this evening, but the Spinners have a chance tomorrow to even the season series.

The Cardinals continue their homestand tomorrow against the Lowell Spinners at 5:00 p.m. Three exciting promotions make Skylands Park a big draw tomorrow night. AAA day will be sponsored by AAA Atlantic, and the Blues Brothers are making an appearance. The second and final Scout Sleepover will take place after the game on the field itself.
